What is the purpose of ALA Aloha Girls State? The purpose is to promote pride in America, and increase understanding of how our government is intended to operate. Delegates will learn this by creating a mythical state that the citizens will govern at the city, county and state level. Speakers who serve as leaders in our Hawai'i government, hold important offices in our communities, and experts in their fields will give delegates insight, and substance to carry with them far beyond our week of ALA AGS.
What will ALA Aloha Girls State cost? ALA Aloha Girls State is a well-known program of the American Legion Auxiliary. The staff is 100% volunteer, most are members of the ALA or are former Girls State citizens. The over $800 tuition per girl is paid by American Legion Auxiliary Aloha Girls State who raises money throughout the year from fundraisers and donation. Schools and other contributing organizations are welcomed and encouraged to donate funds to help send qualified girls to this premier program. Each delegate brings some spending money for souvenirs, snacks and other essentials throughout the week.
What if my daughter decides not to go? If she is the delegate and has received the official notification letter; we need to be notified immediately. We can notify an alternate who is "waiting in the wings" for the opportunity to go. If someone does not tell us and "just doesn't show up", the auxiliary unit or the contributing organization forfeits the tuition which is estimated over $800. The auxiliary unit, contributing organization and the high school, as a courtesy, will be informed.
How do I contact my daughter while she is at Aloha Girls State? In the delegate's registration packet are phone numbers and addresses for emergencies. She may also bring a cell phone but can not take it outside of Residence Hall. If she has voice mail set up on her cell phone, she can return your call upon return to the Residence Hall. Please also remember to check out updated online at facebook page ALA-Aloha-Girls-State.
Is there an emergency phone number at the university? We have several numbers for you to call depending upon the time of day (Director and Counselor personal phone numbers will be provided in registration packet).
11:30 p.m. - 7:30 a.m. University Public Safety Office Phone 808-689-2911
Additional Emergency Contact Phone numbers will be provided in your registration packet.
What if my daughter gets sick or hurt at ALA Aloha Girls State? She will be given prompt medical attention. A doctor's signature on the medical form allows our staff nurses to dispense "over the counter" medication such as aspirin, Tylenol, cough drops, sore throat lozenges, etc. The Nurse's Station at ALA Aloha Girls State is in room TBA. If it is determined she needs emergency medical care and needs to be seen by a doctor, she will be taken to the Queens Medical Center - West Oahu, 91-2141 Fort Weaver Road, Ewa Beach 96706, Phone 808-691-3000 . You will be called immediately.
Will my daughter be supervised the entire week? Yes, your daughter will be assigned to a group of approximately 9 girls with a "City" name and each city has a counselor and an assistant counselor. We also have other staff members who assist with ALA Aloha Girls State who help in supervising and guiding the girls throughout the week.
How will I know what my daughter will be doing during the week? You are welcome to download the week's schedule. We will also update the web site frequently during the week, listing elected offices, highlighting the days' activities and include pictures of "government in action". We also post on Facebook. What is ALA Girls Nation? Since 1947, ALA Girls Nation has provided aspiring young women leaders firsthand experience with practical insight into how the federal government works. While at ALA Aloha Girls State, girls will have the opportunity to compete for one of two spots to attend ALA Girls Nation. During ALA Aloha Girls State, two girls will be chosen from a group of approximately four (4) finalists to represent Hawai'i's ALA Aloha Girls State as Senators at Girls Nation, held in Washington D.C. in July. Before arriving at ALA Girls Nation, the two Senators will collaborate to write one (1) proposed bill or resolution to present and 'campaign' for during the senate sessions at ALA Girls Nation. Templates and instructions will be provided to the two chosen. Many delegates seek to be included in the finalist group. The screening and selection process will be explained in the delegate information packet. Selection to ALA Girls Nation is based on legislation ideas, writing and oral communication abilities. Two alternates are also chosen in case one or both selected Senators are unable to attend ALA Girls Nation.
