Give Aloha, Foodland’s Annual Community Matching Gifts Program, was created to honor Foodland’s founder, Maurice J. “Sully” Sullivan, and continue his legacy of giving back to the community. Each year during the month of September, customers are invited to make a donation at Foodland to their favorite participating Hawaii nonprofit organizations. Since the program began in 1999, a total of more than $39.5 million has been raised for Hawaii’s charities.
How It Works:During September, Maika’i members are invited to make donations up to $249 to ALA Hawaii Girls State. For more information about Foodland’s Give Aloha program, please see our Give Aloha FAQs
Donations to each organization are tracked, and Foodland’s matching gift is divided proportionately among all participating organizations based on customer donations to the organizations. For more information about Foodland’s Give Aloha program, please see our Give Aloha FAQs
Your gift is tax-deductible to the fullest extent of the law. Please save your store receipt for tax purposes, as it will be the only record you will have of your donation.

SPONSORSHIP LETTER 2020
Aloha,
The volunteers of ALA Hawai’i Girls State are reaching out to you today in efforts to build the name of a national program with grassroots efforts that have been positively affecting youth for over 80 years.
Since before World War II in 1937, the American Legion Auxiliary conducts a premier youth leadership program in each state of the United States to promote citizen engagement at the high school level.
The ALA Girls State program is a nationally recognized, nonpartisan program that teaches young women responsible citizenship. Each state in the United States of America has one ALA Girls State program where Selected high school girls having completed their junior year spend intensive days of study through a "simulated government" immersive learning experience working together as self-governing citizens.
These future leaders assume roles in fictional political parties, run for and hold offices, and learn the fundamentals of the legislative process, the three branches of government, and parliamentary procedure. They learn lifelong lessons in leadership grounded in civics, teamwork, advocacy, consensus building, and respect. Two girls become “senators” to attend ALA Girls Nation, a weeklong national government training program in Washington, D.C. (At no charge to the participant).
In order to provide continued foundation for this program in Hawai’i, the ALA Hawai’i Girls State (ALAHGS) is seeking to create an operating budget and build seed funding, which will fund transportation, provide meals and lodging, and cover activity fees. There is no paid staff and every dollar directly benefits the participants of ALA Hawai’i Girls State.
There are numerous levels of need and if you have another idea, please indicate as such. ALHGS is a tax-deductible non-profit organization.
ALAHGS is a 501(c)(19), which enjoys all of the exact same deductions as 501(c )(3), the ‘19’ is indicative of the volunteers being made up of United States Military/Veterans and their families (but, the girls attending the session do not have to have military affiliation).
To sponsor one girl through this program is only $700. Maybe you are called to sponsor a lunch ($500), dinner ($750), or provide in-kind donation of printing, or name tags, or lodging/meeting rooms, etc.
We welcome all of your generous ideas and are thankful that you took time to read this and learn more about our program.
Please contact [email protected] or call (808) 284-0293 for any questions. You can find more information at this link: www.HawaiiGirlsState.org.
