We hope you will be as thrilled as we are to join in supporting this group of volunteers working to bring the national program sponsored by American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) called Aloha Girls State back to Hawai’i every summer.
Hawai’i was the ONLY state in the United States that did operate this program for over 30 years. Which means that Hawai’i girls did not have the opportunity to represent Hawai’i at ALA Girls Nation in Washington DC each summer, which often includes a meeting with the President of the United States. We are striving to revitalize this program and we encourage you to support this impressive youth leadership program.
Since the inception of the ALA Girls State program in 1937, nearly one million young people have had the opportunity to learn first-hand how their state and local government works. Hawai’i’s last ALA Hawai'i Girls State program was in the early 1980’s and was revived in 2016, but need your assistance to sustain this impressive leadership program.
What is ALA Hawai'i Girls State? It is the ALA’s marquee program and is one of the most respected and coveted experiential learning programs presented in the United States. It is a nonpartisan program that teaches young women responsible citizenship. At minimal cost to high school girls having completed their junior year, selected students spend intensive days of study through a "simulated government" immersive learning experience working together as self-governing citizens. The young women become knowledgeable of the democratic process and how our republic form of government works at the state and national levels. They learn lifelong lessons in leadership grounded in civics, teamwork, advocacy, consensus building, and respect. Two girls will be selected as “senators” from Hawai’i’s ALA Aloha Girls State program to attend Girls Nation, a week long national government training program in Washington, D.C.
In order to provide solid grounding for this this program in Hawai'i, the ALA is seeking to raise funding, which will fund transportation, provide meals and lodging and cover activity fees. Your monetary donation will support this program. Since there is no paid staff, every dollar directly benefits the participants of ALA Aloha Girls State.
